Amsoil Question

I have not intended to make this a motor oil discussion. I am just asking for feedback from anyone who has used or uses Amsoil motor oil, particularly in their CB1100. A friend of mine has used it for years in all of his vehicles, and he swears by it. The literature published by Amsoil sure reads good, but I would like to hear the opinions from folks on this forum. Thank you.

I used to have an Amsoil rep as a friend. Used it in my first few bikes, which were V-twins. It was fine, and touts being a "true synthetic from synthetic stock". When my friend moved away, I switched to Mobil 1 and Castrol synthetic for ease of finding it, and didn't notice anything different.

Mobil 1 synthetic 10/40 motorcycle oil is just as good or better and cheaper and easier to find . (even at Walmart )

Have not used it. Currently using Shell Rotella T6 10W40.

I use the Honda Full Synthetic.

Had used AMSOIL in the air cooled HD's in the past, but it became a PITA to find.

I am pretty sure any brand of full syn combined with regular changes will keep your CB running fine.

i want to post about how i use it, but the truth is i've had my CB1100 for about 1 and a half years now, at about 22k miles, so it's not like you'd ever notice a difference between Amsoil and standard oils during that time. It's my understanding that using Amsoil is the proverbial "long game." since i'm expecting to see 6 digit mileage on this bike, perhaps multiple times over, i'm just using it because it's spoken very highly of by more than one professional mechanic as the appropriate oil for said "long game."

Amsoil is good stuff, and I used it in the Harley I had prior to my CB1100EX. I run Honda full synthetic HP4S in the CB. One of my quirks is that I just prefer full synthetic, and I find that ordering the Honda oil online puts the cost down to comparable with other full syn oils, even with shipping included. Unless that changes in the future or I make a change from 10w30 to 10w40, I will stay with the HP4S.

One of the problems with Amsoil, at least for me, is availability. You cant just find it anywhere, although I think it can be ordered online like anything else. If I were to go to a 10w40, I would probably go with Mobile 1. It is a good oil, and can be found everywhere. My better half and I run Mobile 1 in both of our cars.

I use nothing but Amsoil in my 1991 ZR-1 Corvette and have personal experience knowing the stuff works. Here’s the deal,this car has got a 32 valve DOHC motor,the cam chains for this motor make a bunch of racket upon first start up when the motors cold. I switched from MOBIL 1 to Amsoil and it really quieted down the cam chain racket. Now here’s the brutal part,the motor takes 10 quarts of oil each time I do an oil change. At $10+ a quart it’s a little steap,drain the oil cooler and thats another 3 quarts. I haven’t put it in my bike yet but will look into it at some point.
