Yep, I started calling them RLETs because we were typing "rubber lever end thingies" WAY too often.

I had a sporty 4 day trip to New Hampshire last week, averaged 300+ miles per day. Best part was in the mountain back roads, I was flying. And in perfect comfort, my CB1100 has a unique frame mount Vesco full fairing set-up.

Outta MY league, but one of our ALR members is a member and rides an H-D all over the country. I've never seen a guy do the mileage he piles on. He was up to Canada for some ride around Lake Onterio in one day. Completion, documented 1000 mi in 24 hrs, got you membership in the group.

Jheck10 I have done two multi-day trips on my CB, here are my ride reports:
http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=2752 http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=3412 Personally I believe my '11 performs beautifully on long trips. I'm about 6ft so I had to purchase a taller seat. Other touring accessories that have made life easier have been the luggage rack, soft pannier bags, lambs wool seat cover and a tank bag. My bike did come with a small screen but I actually find it more comfortable (and stylish) without, I find it tends to direct air towards the top of your forehead rather than evenly across your upper body, leaving you bobbing around like a bobble head. However the CB is only my second bike, the first being a Ninja 250R so I'm not exactly an expert when it comes to recommendations. Without a doubt your ST would definitely be the superior sports-tourer but if you're looking to downsize your collection then I think a CB1100 could be a worthy choice.

When younger, I did many long trips on motorcycles, some of which were not as comfortable as the CB1100. Generally, I average a mile-a-minute or 60MPH including stops. I do ride 75 or 80 on open roads and sometimes a wee bit faster if traffic is moving faster. I once did a 1000 mile day (Colorado Springs to St. Louis) while experiencing several thunderstorms on a 1976 BMW R90S. Last summer at age 65 rode the Gold Wing from NJ to Alabama and back with side trip through the Dragon. Traffic on I81 in WV and PA was doing 85 or so.
The CB1100 could be a decent long-distance bike but it has a couple of weaknesses - it vibrates a bit, has no wind protection and a smallish tank. I added a small fairing. I intend to ride mine from NJ to the Dragon in September as the Gold Wing is too heavy and bulky for those mountain roads. |
