That's great news, MG. I hope he gets as much pleasure from riding as I have, and that you both ride many happy miles together.

Don't be anxious Chapomis. I won't be there to lead him astray.

My son is seriously considering a Kawasaki Ninja 300. It seems like a nice bike to start on. I've always been a fan of Kawasaki and have owned a Vulcan 900, a Ninja 650 and a Ninja ZX6R; all of which I thoroughly enjoyed riding.

I was in the same boat as you last year MG. Our youngest daughter wanted to start riding. Wasn't enthused about it at all (not because of her) but because I see all the distracted drivers when I'm riding. It was inevitable so we had her take the Motorcycle Safety Course given by the local Harley dealer. Two upsides are she likes to wear her safety gear and likes to ride with her father and his friends so a lot of times she's with me and I can keep an eye on her.

I'm also a fan of that new 300. Too bad it wasn't available in 2012 when my son got his m/c endorsement. I bought him a 2012 CBR250R in red/white/blue w/ ABS. He rode that bike for 3 yrs commuting to school & college b/f recently selling it. These small sport bikes make very good learner bikes.

My parents aren't huge fans of me riding (well my dad is a-ok, my mom worries a lot) but I am not one of the "invincible" minded kids anyway. I am active on Reddit, and the motorcycle forum there is a great place where people share videos and stories. It's been a great tool for me to see what is good and bad riding as well as being reminded that it's 'cool' to go ATGATT and be constantly on the lookout for SMIDSYs. I took an MSF course and it was great. I highly recommend. Does your son have friends that ride? If so, as long as they're good riders and not hooligans, he should be fine. I certainly wish I could ride with my dad!!

I can also attest towards the general attitude of our generation (let's call it those currently 18-30) is not to throw on a bandana and sunglasses and call it good, rather we're typically concerned with riding gear... whether as a fashion statement or as legitimate protection/comfort we're all about it.
My reasoning for highlighting this is that I nor anybody else on this forum knows your son, let alone how well you know him. For all we know he isn't like myself or Vervecken and thinks tennis shoes are fine and gloves are unnecessary.
So I say read him for what he is and actually take the appropriate steps to ensure that he learns how to ride defensively and when/where it is and more importantly where it is not appropriate to be a hooligan. Do not procrastinate getting involved, even though your concern already tells me you won't, I'm just trying to validate your efforts.

I had a cbr250r and wish I still had it. They bored it out to 300 and that bike got great reviews. Same for the ninja300.
Technically, I guess they increased the stroke, not the bore.

Congrats on the new family rider, appreciate all the opportunities.
When my friends (and lifelong riding companion) mother was losing the battle with cancer I spent a bit of time with her. Good lady with wicked sense of humor. She was laughing, and pleased, that my friend had a son "who was just like him growing up".

Two years ago I got a Kawasaki ER-5 for my daughter.
While she's living in another town, sometimes we meet and go out for a ride together, which is always fun.
She really enjoys riding, as you can see at the big grin on her face:

I have no children and maybe thats good because i can understand the concern. I've did all forbidden, had much luck all over life (now almost 56 yo) travelled middle east in the end seventies early eighties on my honda cb750 K0 and if im honest could have been injured for many times, which never happened. I guess i had some angel on my shoulder always.
We all know we have to be double careful when we drive our bikes, and im sure you have to be lucky a couple of times.
Im still so happy with my bike as i was first time 18 to start driving.
My mother now 85 never showed any concern and lately had short trip with me on the honda ... she love it!
