Peter, thanks for sharing your experience, very interesting. Much better story than I got about being temporary detained by the Thousand Island Bridge U.S. Customs, I was riding my Honda CA77 returning after a month stay at my relatives home in Ontario, CA during the Summer of 1971. BTW, my Honda didn’t break down during this trip, like my cousin’s Norton Commando did.

Mike, Honda CA77 was a nice bike and I know you still have it.
At the end of the summer of 1971, I had a nasty moto accident that took about 2 years of my life due to intensive recovery.

@suhawk, Mike, it was a nasty accident.
Long story short...
I had to replace the piston in my friend's bike, which was parked 50 km away.
I had a 50cc moped at the time and my friend came with his 350cc single cylinder 4 stroke bike and offered to go faster and I agreed.
He then pushed us between two tracktor trailers going in opposite directions.
My friend left the hospital after 4-6 weeks with a broken tibia in one leg... and I had a double fractured left femur, a smashed knee, torn muscles and internal infection with bleeding... ready for amputation at the age of 17.
My futher was the person who saved my leg saying: as long as his leg is attached to his body, you (doctors) have to save it, unless if fells off on its own.
And he did!
