And we don't, and may never, know the answer. See post [url=http://cb1100forum.com/forum/showthread.php?tid=9767&pid=154630#pid154630]#15.

The only accurate fuel gauge is the trip ODO. Figure out your average mpg. Then calculate how many miles you can drive before you need to fill up and still have a gallon in reserve. When you fill up, set the trip ODO to zero.

I have two bikes with fuel gauges and have never trusted either of them. Also, I have never run out of gas. Crap now I probably will.
Depends on how you ride, be sure to go with a very conservative value. I've never gotten less than 40 mpg average, I like to twist the throttle, so that's a decent number I'd guess.

I have found the digital fuel gages in my bikes to be very reliable, only when I pushed the ZX-10R to the limit did I run out of gas. They all give plenty of warning.

Bike was level, but clearly not much fuel left in the tank with a reading of 22 miles to go 'till empty. Bike was then leaned over onto the kickstand. Gas pools in the lowest part of the tank. Starves the pickup. I can't disprove odder, less likely causes, but fuel starvation is way at the top of the list, isn't it?

Hasn’t happened since so it’s still a mystery. I think it was just lowernon fuel than the computer was indicating.

That behaviour seems to have been experienced by a few Forum members over the years in regards to displayed vs. actual fuel remaining.

The computer knows exactly how much fuel it has metered out the injectors, but I wonder if other variances like evaporation, ethanol content (?), bike lean (e.g. on side stand), and possibly exact refill measure is throwing off the estimation a bit.

This is probably the case. The only time I ran out of fuel, the bike said I had nearly 25 miles remaining to empty but I got stranded about 1.5 miles from a gas station at the top of a freeway overpass. That sucked. Maybe it just doesn’t have a very accurate float in the tank or whatever. I’ve ran it till the low fuel warning came on before and did not run out. I keep it above 1/4 now if I can help it.

The lowest I have ever taken the tank was 2 L (about 1/2 gallon) before reaching a gas station. Your experience is good to keep in mind.

I also have CAA (like AAA) that will deliver gasoline if my m/c goes dry. Useful for rides in North America.
