A little update (hip related)
#21
It's not unusual for people with colitis (like I have) to lose 20-30 pounds without trying. Like I said I've lost 14 pounds in 2 months, but I'm down to eating rice crispies and a cup of caffeine free tea for breakfast with lactose free milk, a half turkey sandwich on gluten free bread with some applesauce for lunch with a bottle of water, and a baked chicken breast with white rice and applesauce for dinner most days. No gluten, no lactose, and very limited caffeine. Usually have a cup of caffeine free tea and a couple homemade gluten free oatmeal raisin cookies for a snack in the evening...and jelly beans are gluten free so I eat some of those. Nothing spicy, nothing fried, nothing breaded, no cakes, no pies. You'd be surprised what all has gluten (wheat) in it.

Gluten the main villain in the digestive track is in wheat and is used in most breads, rolls, pastas etc. Lactose, another gut villain is in dairy products like milk, cheese etc and caffeine is in drinks like coffee tea and colas. Cut out those three and you cut out a lot of stuff that make you gain and maintain weight.

Hope your symptoms are improving with your diet.

Special Diet - mine, yours and many others reminds me of a joke I heard.

A Dr. tells a patient, "If you quit eating donuts (add your favorite food here), you will extend your life expectancy by 2 years.

Patient, "Let me get this straight, if I don't take your advise; I get to eat donuts until the day that I die."

"If I do take your advice, I have suffer now AND an additional 2 years without donuts?"

ROFL isn't that the truth

Thanks offroad. I go in for a check up tomorrow and to see if I need to continue the meds. Word on the street is it takes 2-5 years for the gut to heal and for you to feel halfway normal. I'm a few months into the healing process so..... No donuts for awhile! Lol

My hip was due to arthritis too but it really becomes when the pain is so bad you have to do something.

The magic to the weight like said above is cutting the carbs Max of 50-75 grams per day. That means no bread no potato chips no french fries no popcorn.... you can eat the top off of a pizza but not the crust.

I live off meat, cheese and four cups of vegetables per day and lots of protein bars and protein shakes. The protein shakes and bars have some sugar and carbs in them that seems to satisfy the sugar craving. Just be careful not all so-called protein bars are created equal try to get some with less than 25 grams of carbs and less than just a few grams of sugar.

I still began to reach set points that I just couldn't get any lower then I started walking now up to two miles per day that keeps it slowly moving down.

It's really hard when you're around other people but if you're alone it's easy to keep on the diet.

I'm down lower than I have been for at least 20 years so it's not a lost cause. Good luck and hang in there it is possible.

I suffer from Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD) during the winter due to the lack of sunshine. It is a form of mild depression. So I began walking the local nature for an hour a day. I trimmed off about 1 pound a month and felt a lot better.

Two winters ago I stopped. Winter seemed horribly long, I didn't feel like doing anything, and gained 8 pounds.

This year I started walking again and lost 6 pounds. I probably would have lost all 8, but got sick with a terrible cold in March and stopped walking.

Walking is an enjoyable form of exercise as the fresh air and sunshine really perks you up, and rids you of any stress you may have nagging you. Something like riding a motorcycle.
I suffer from Seasonal Affected Disorder (SAD) during the winter due to the lack of sunshine. It is a form of mild depression. So I began walking the local nature for an hour a day. I trimmed off about 1 pound a month and felt a lot better. I get that every year. The further north, the worse it is. I spent a month in Oregon a few years back, very tough. Rained, snowed in, couldn't get back down south.

I just try to gut it out.

SAD is for real. Our constantly changing position in space affects how our brain processes motion and position.

Every year, the Earth, with us on it, travels 292,000,000 miles in its orbit. Its average speed is 33,335 miles per hour. Add to that its rotation about its axis, you've got Magic Mountain's craziest ride * 2356. (Nobody knows what that is).

The orbit is elliptical, so it is constantly either moving toward or away from the sun. The sun exerts a tremendous amount of gravity on the Earth, and that's constantly changing. Your conscious mind cannot perceive it, but the unconscious mind, responsible for processing the outrageous rates of speed and insane kinds of motion we are always in, can sense it. The filter between the two becomes overwhelmed sometimes and we get out of kilter.

Then calculate into all this the movement of our galaxy, and the movement and expansion of the universe itself. That's a lot for your brain to manage.

584,000,000 miles, actually Angel

Ferret Biker may have to increase his mileage goals.

Ferret Biker may have to increase his mileage goals. Correct, pi*diameter, I used the radius instead, in my haste to seem extra-intelligent. Now those are REALLY big numbers, double it all.

When I actually do plan space flight, I double-check my figures.

Now we all know why I need a '17 EX; it's the trip computer, so I don't wind up pushing my spaceship, er, motorcycle to the nearest gas station.

A little back story...a little over two years ago I had surgery to repair a torn labrum in my right hip that had been plaguing me for quite some time and that made things MUCH better and riding became much more enjoyable. I could actually swing my leg over without any pain, something that I hadn't been able to do for a good number of years.
So anyway....I thought I was having some sort of relapse and might need to go under the knife again. Thankfully (I think) that isn't the case, but the news isn't what I was looking for either. He told me that I am dealing with arthritis in my hip joint and right now the best course of treatment is just Aleve or Motrin for the pain. There doesn't seem to be any other deterioration of the joint as the spacing looks good on the X-ray so no hip replacement (I wasn't suspecting this, but you never really know until you talk to the doctor).
It's REALLY fun getting old....ugh.

Oh and he told me to lose some weight....about 50-70 lbs would be good. I would love it, but it's probably not in the cards.

I've mentioned elsewhere that a particular medication that I require throws my eating habits all out of whack (it actually messes with me in a number of different ways, but the weight gain is the only physically obvious side effect). As my tolerance to the drug increases, I have to increase my dosage of the medication. Along with that comes additional weight. Once the side effects outweigh the benefits, the doctors will switch me over to an alternative medication for a while, which I'm on now.

in general, I have decent "will power" when it comes to food. But when I'm on higher dosages of the primary drug, that all goes out the window. I rarely stop eating even though I'm no longer hungry and I eat far less healthy foods. As a result, my weight tends to go up by around 30 - 40 lbs. or more depending on the length of time I'm on the drug. Once I switch medications and get the primary drug completely out of my system, I no longer have the crazy food cravings and I'll eventually return to a more typical weight. I'm 5' 8" and normally I should weigh in somewhere in the low 160's. This last time around on the weight gain roller coaster I stopped checking the scale when I was getting ready to pass 200 lbs (I know that I passed 200, I'm just not sure by how much and I didn't want to know, lol). It feels good to be on my way back down again simply by returning to more normal eating habits. By the end of this week I'll be back in the 170's but the rate at which I'm losing weight has already started to slow. Now I'll also have to consciously work at it if I want to make it back into the 160's. Eventually my system will build up a tolerance to the medication I'm on now and I'll have to return to my primary drug and then I can look forward to this process repeating itself.

Going through this experience has helped me develop much more empathy for anyone that has to contend with weight issues. I realize that some have an easier time controlling their diet and exercise than do others and a few never have to worry about this sort of thing (I used to think I'd be one of them, lol). All I can do is wish you the best Randy and let you know that I'm rooting for you. I like to think of every pound I loose as a performance upgrade for my CB (or any vehicle that happens to be lugging me around for that matter). As goofy as it sounds, it does help me stay focused on losing the weight and keeping a better eye on what I eat. That might not work for anyone else, but it does help me, which is the key when it comes to my own battle with trying to lose weight. I hope that you find whatever it might be that helps you do the same.
I should add that I've spent a fair amount of money on moto-gear and I definitely want to be able to still fit in that gear and make use of it. At the rate I was going this last time around, it felt like if I had kept it up I might have been able to start selling advertising to Goodyear on the sides of my Aerostich suit.

My stomach is so sensitive now that I suffer a lot of pain if I eat anything but raw foods. It's unbearable. That's the only way I keep my weight normal.

I also get severe migraines from many common food additives. Junk food is impossible; I lose 48-72 hours per migraine to recover.

Cheese, rice, fruit, nuts, vegetables, that's it. And water.

But I drink a metric boatload of caffeine, or what seems like it.

Four shots a day of espresso, usually, morning and afternoon. I guess that's not so bad, it's mixed with steamed milk which makes it a lot less harsh.

I mix that up with some Long Ching (Dragonwell) green tea from time to time to change things around.

I can't do without caffeine. Or shall I say, it would very troublesome to kick it.

As far as meds, when I took an ambulance trip to the ER for hernia pain recently (turned out to be a slight tear in the scar tissue) they gave me some kind of anti-nausea medication.

Took a MONTH to get over the side effects. Weird dreams, dehydration, irregularity...

So, no one is in perfect health. We're all the walking wounded in some way.

My deepest sympathies to all of you blighted by chronic health issues. It's no fun.

For those for whom weight is an issue, the following report I read over the weekend may be of interest: http://www.abc.net.au/news/health/2018-0...s/9345648.

At 67 I have never taken any medication in my life except a baby aspirin for the last 8 years.
I am probably about 15 lbs heavier than I should be but eat healthy with meat and ice cream and lots of fruit but all in moderation.
Never smoked and hate soft drinks but do drink alcohol .
