Nicky Hayden Injured In Bike Crash

So hard to put this tragic end together in my mind with the recent picture of him descending the corkscrew in a victory lap with the flag on his shoulder.

Terribly tragic.

Seems like such an incongruous turn of events, that a man who made a living dashing madcap around a racetrack at 200 mph on a motorcycle would die in a roadside accident on a pedal / push bike.

He will be missed by the sport and by his legions of fans in the US and around the world.

I had breakfast with him and the whole Hayden family last June at the Hampton inn at Leeds Alabama . Very down to earth people , no put on airs about them at all, they loved their fan base. This was at Barber for motoamerica races. I for one will miss him .

Ironic, certainly. But the rest is a little cruel perhaps? From the reports I read, it sounded like Hayden was part of a group doing a good deal more than something dull and regular.

I think what Zack means by 'dull regularity' is that riding a bicycle for physical fitness is rather mundane compared to competing at the highest levels of motosport.

P.S. Zack used the word 'ironic' improperly. Irony is when, in the attempt to avoid a particular outcome, your actions inadvertently bring about the unwanted outcome. Not really the case here.

I don't want to be picky, but I reckon the use of ironic was correct. Consider this definition of irony: "A state of affairs or an event that seems deliberately contrary to what one expects and is often wryly amusing as a result". Forget the amusing part, but Nicky Hayden's death on a bicycle rather than the track could well be described as an "event ... contrary to what one expects ..."

Well that's no good. All those miles at 100-200 mph and he gets critically injured probably doing 20. Shame. heal fast Nicky!

I think the key is 'deliberately'. For example, there was a Popeye cartoon where he was fighting a termite infestation. He was concerned they they would destroy his house. However, in the ensuing battle with the termites, Popeye ended up completely destroying the house himself. Thus, a case of irony.

Another example: a man is madly in love with a woman and is afraid of losing her. He smothers her with attention and slavishly devotes himself to fulfilling her every wish and need, to make sure she always loves him back. But the woman loses respect for the man and becomes disgusted with his insecurity, finally leaving him. That is ironic. Through his behavior and actions, the man himself brought about the very outcome he sought to avoid.

I don't think what happened to Nicky was contrary to his deliberate intentions. In other words, he wasn't riding a bicycle in order to avoid being killed while riding a bicycle.

Was he in the front, middle, or back off the group'
Did the car hit him from behind or head on?
This is assuming he was in a group?
Last but not least was he wearing a helmet?
They said multiple traumatic injuries, but just curious.
