I put my oil filter on hand tight. They will tighten if anything. I have read about people over tightening them and ruining the gasket. At the same time, after oil changes I always take her for a good run at high engine speed and check for leaks.

Final verdict was that the old gasket somehow stayed on as well so it couldn't seal well. I have no idea how that happened because I cleaned the whole area and never saw it but it will definitely never happen again.

I have always changed the oil on everything I own. It happened to me about 30 years ago. Always check, have never had one stick since.

Hey, stuff gets missed. I have done hundreds of oil changes, and have not had a double gasket issue, but just recently forgot to install the filler cap on a bike before firing it up and spraying oil everywhere lol.

No damage done, so laugh it off.

Thanks Ferret! The only damage was the rear brake pad (probably could have been cleaned/sanded) but I replaced it. When it happened I hit the rear break and I just fishtailed and had to mainly use the engine to come to a stop. Kinda scary. Scary enough to triple check the gasket next time! Haha

Had to use the engine mainly to stop?? You know the bike has 2 big front disc brakes that work very well...

You would be amazed how many people are afraid to use the front brakes on a motorcycle thinking they are going to dump it.

At 65 in a turning lane they would work too well..... so engine first then front brakes... doesn't seem as dumb as you're making it seem.
