want to read what your experience could be like if you weren't on a CB, go to a Ducati, or Guzzi forum. I have and after visiting those forums and seeing the issues they have on brand new bikes..transmissions locked up, motors locked up, electrical gremlins, fit and finish issues, I am so happy to have my CB1100.

If it gets a little dull around here at times, I can live with that.

Ferret, with all due respect--I know you haven't swept that "weird high/low idle issue" under the rug, meaning you've gone to lengths to help those of us with the issue by cataloging the symptoms and I thank you for that, seriously. I referred Honda to that page in the letter I wrote them, and printed it our for my customer service manager where I bought the bike.

At the same time, we have several long threads with 35 owners experiencing that problem and then to hear it summed up in 5 words as WHLII (can we coin that abbreviation? Weird High/Low Idle Issue) ...well, I don't know, the bike's (and Honda's) rock solid rep takes a merited hit for some of us.

I get it, probably 10, 20? thousand of these sold since '13 across the globe. and for 35 to maybe 50? of us to have the problem worldwide, it is a small number.

Nevertheless, it makes one such as me--who loves the bike otherwise--ask myself whether I shouldn't trade it in for maybe a Triumph Street Twin, or Scrambler, that way I would get to experience a whole different set of problems, I'm sure ; )

I think if the fix for it were found, and it was $100 or 200 part fixable at 1 or 2 hours, then I could stomach that. What's sad is to hear of a few bikes getting repaired--under warranty--at 1300 and even 3000 plus for that throttle body replacment. If I knew the idle thing would never get any worse than it is now (mine doesn't stall, goes back and forth between high and low, comes and goes), I could live with that.

If/when I ever move on from this bike, it will always carry an asterisk by its name in my book. Great bike, but a small--yet not insignificant--number of them suffer from WHLII.

Regardless, I am still thankfull for this site and thanks mods and admins for keeping it going.

Now, if a fix can be found that doesn't cost north of a grand, that would remove the asterisk. Maybe...in time. Fingers crossed.

How's that? Is this thread getting any phatter?Biker

Lol yes I understand, it's got to be extremely aggravating for those of you with the WHLII, but on the plus side, they are not leaving you broken down on the side of the road like a Ducati with a locked transmission, or a Moto Guzzi with a locked up motor, or a BMW with a blown final drive. They are idling + or - 400 rpms too high or too low. Would you rather there was an issue that when you took off in the morning, that there was a reasonable chance that you'd be coming home in the cab of a tow truck with your bike on a flat bed?

You know, if it were up to me, none of you would have an issue with your bikes, ever, and I wish that those of you that do find a reasonable solution.

Reminiscent of my 1976 CFB750F.
Oil
Tires
Chain
Maybe brakes (I don't actually use them very much)...
over 5 years and ~40,000 miles.

Think it was a 5 gallon tank, good for ~190 miles.
Nice thing about carbs was being able to run the tank dry/almost dry.

Below is not my bike, but looks exactly the same other than aftermarket exhaust and custom mini-rack on the rear cowling.

I own that exact same bike in your picture - bought it brand new in October 1976 in upstate NY for $1,850.00. It's mostly disassembled in my garage right now because I started a restoration almost two years ago, but haven't touched it in almost a year now. 123,000 miles.

Me too. If I take the German CB1100 Forum for example, the amount of posts has slowed down up to a degree where you can nearly call it a standstill in comparison to monthes in which posts very frequently flew in and led to an active exchange of the members. In wintertime most motorbike riders stop riding and the whole aspect of being involved with it and the machine fades somehow away in the background of garages, carports or being literally covered.

Some don't do that and stay active as good as their time and the weather allows it. I try my very best because I enjoy motorbikeriding so much, not only as an activity being restricted to special seasons of the year.

So, since it's quiet i have a question ( oh boy ) ; as i have a 2010 cb1100 which does the 1500 rpm. idle when cold but
does not appear to have an iacv installed, i can't find it anywhere on the throttle body.

what exactly is it that the iacv does, is it opening the throttle shaft slightly or is it a moving piston that regulates the idle airflow according to the temperature?

In any case has anybody tried to disconnect the iacv electrical connector when the engine is at operating temperature ( ie in the correct state for normal operation ) and leave it disconnected to see if the problem still occurs ?

Reason for asking is that although i don't have the issue it intrigues me no end and i also have a hornet 900 which is similar in the way that it has a tps, but no idle control valve and it starts just fine every time without using the manual choke, just wondering;

The IACV is the idle air control valve and controls-wait for it-idle speed. Smile

It is a stepper motor that rotates the valve. Looks like a shaft or tube in the service manual. It is mounted in the throtle body assembly and it is not fun to get to. Your bike does have one. All the CBs do.

Here is where it is: https://www.partsfish.com/oemparts/a/hon...ottle-body It is item 4, called a motor assy on the part fiche.

Thanks popgun, you spurred me on, after lifting the fuel tank and removing the black rh side cover it was easy to spot, thanks for the link.

After finding it i decided to unplug the connector and see what happens.

So with the key off i unplugged the 4 wire connector, then turned the key on and started the engine
With the engine cold it started up fine as usual and sat just below 1000 rpm.
Also the orange engine light was blinking 3 long and 8 short blips ( code 38 ) probably code for faulty IACV ?
The ecm monitors the current through the windings of the IACV and reports a low current ( open ) condition

4 wires are connected to the IACV which as you mentioned drives the stepper motor, i assume the feedback to the ecm is by oil temp, tps and rev counter which are combined, written to flash memory, and as the operating temperature increases the value changes and sets the position of the stepper motor accordingly.

At this point i am wondering what would happen if the stepper motor is stuck enough so the actuator does not retract back fully and gets stuck halfway back, only to get another set of steps on the next cold start....

Thanks for your help; max

Bought mine late Dec 1976 for about the same price. Had to delete the photo to add an attachment to another post. Not set-up to otherwise attach photos.

Max, suggest that you research cleaning IAC for future reference.
Your theory may be correct, as cleaning it is a common automotive service procedure.
