Fender rust...how to eliminate (revisited)

Those I can see well enough, it's the disconnecting of the tail light wiring that I'm unsure of.

I removed the rear fender along with the rear light, after disconnecting the rear L and R turn signals and the rear light connectors... under the tool tray??

Yes!  I was able to get the rear fender off.  What I was thinking was the tail light wiring...wasn't.

Once I realized what I needed to disconnect, then it wasn't so hard.  For the '17 models, it's only the tail light wiring, the turn signals wires stay put.

The other day I started to clean some of the rust off the underside of the rear fender; I got a good deal of it, but not fun due to the angle and hard to reach factor.  Now it should go better:

I have my rear turn signals mounted on the rear fender bracket due to SW MOTECH side racks

Looks like everything is going well...

30 minute soak with the rust juice, and 10 minutes with wire brush on the rear...


Meanwhile, the front was drying and came out as hoped after removing the masking tape




Front fender is back on and the rear fender is drying.

This is what happens when your trip is cut short and now you have too much time on your hands.

Nice job pdedse. I used “POR15” under coatings on my fenders. After I removed the fenders from my CB, I used degreaser and steel wool to remove any bituminous material, dirt and some minor rust that accumulated under the fenders. I then washed the area with dish detergent and water. After the fenders dried, I used a foam paint brush to coat the fenders. After the fenders coating dried overnight, I spread a 2nd thin coat to assure that any missed spots are covered. https://imgur.com/gv3BU5a

That's looks like a very thorough job, nicely done!  Who knows if it is really all that necessary, but it was a fun project and I enjoyed doing it.

That POR15 is some of the best stuff I have ever used for rust. When I restored the frame on my 1977 Chevrolet pickup in highschool I used it on the entire frame and it still looks amazing 10 years later. I even used it on the leaf springs and the paint is still stuck on solid. Considering a leaf spring flexes often you would think the paint would peel off easily but it still looks amazing. Plus I use this truck to haul firewood from my woods so it gets plenty of offroad time and full of mud. Pressure wash it off and it comes back to a glorious black. 10/10 would reccomend the product. Just do NOT get it on yourself as it takes months to come off.... don't ask me how I know

I didn't click through on any of the links you posted, but if any of those threads you linked to ported over, I think linking to the ported threads on the new forum rather than the old forum threads might be helpful when the hosting for the old site stops and those essentially become dead links. I guess we should all probably do that if possible, sad to say.
