Suggested brake pads?

You just need it rough enough to break the glaze. Back in the old days we used to use a thick piece of glass, taped the sandpaper to the glass, then rub the brake pad across it to ensure flatness, checking them every few strokes to see the color change in the pad. When the color was even across the pad it was done.
