Brake pads are for sure cheaper than drive chain or engine parts. But it totally depends on how you will use the engine for deceleration. In a smooth or harsh way. I prefer the first. No need to worry about worn out parts because of this kind of slowing down. You have to downshift anyway to stop. So why not use the engine to slow down? If no stop is intended, you can just shut the gas, the engine's torque is fine for reving up from low revs even in the fith gear. No downshifts necessary for light acceleration afterwards. Maybe in the 6th too, never have ridden a CB with a 6 gear box.
