When I approach an intersection with a car turning left I make myself visible by swaying on my lane. When sitting in a car you'll realize that a bike approaching is merely one spot (i.e. headlight) which comes closer gradually.
By using the whole width of my lane I will be much better seen because it is a sideways motion, too.
Another tip is to watch where the sun is. If you can see your own long shadow then the sun is right behind you. For any car coming up you will be totally invisible because you are hidden in the bright sunlight.
I also like safety training days with skilled professionals. At first it looks expensive (here in Europe you`d spend more than 100,- € that is 135,- Dollars) but if you can avoid one accident it can be considered well spent.
