A little paste polish (I use the Honda stuff) with some fine (.0000) steel wool will keep them looking like new, well, at least shiny gold colored. I suspect the seller of the black 1100 probably never polished them. Riding in rain seems to discolor them a lot faster too. Keeping them looking new requires you to be a little OCD. I can respect those who decide not to clean them, however.
