I've always been a died in the wool naked bike man, originally, I was not going to put a screen on mine. We always seem to have strong winds here where I live, and the freeways are frequently elevated, and this just makes the winds harder. I rode without a screen for a couple of months, but I felt like a human parachute on the freeway. At 70+ mph I was sometimes straining to hold on. I decided to get a detachable screen for road trips, and to leave the bike naked when just riding around. After getting the screen, I still prefer the looks of the bike without it, but I have to admit that the ride has been greatly improved, particularly at highway speeds. At this point, I rarely take the screen off.

Thanks Flynrider. I've never had a screen, but I seem to be spending a bit more time on the highway and I'm beginning to wonder about one. There are mixed reports about them—one experienced mate has told me he's never managed to get one to suit him.

Cormanus, the last thing I wanted to do was corrupt those beautiful lines with a screen. I love the looks of a classic naked bike. But, it gets rather windy around here, and a lot of our freeways are elevated, making it worse. Before the screen, it was not much fun riding the freeways at 70-75+ mph. I was straining to hold on, and I knew I would never want to make a road trip of any length that way.

I started looking at screens, at first I wanted a Dart, but at the time, no one seemed to have one. No one was really talking about them, anyway. I was concerned that the Dart would not be enough. I read some posts regarding the National Cycle deflector, particularly a few by Flynrider, and decided that was the one I wanted. A forum member had one for sale, so I took the plunge, and I'm glad I did.

It is not as minimal as the Dart, but, as shields go, it is still unobtrusive. The good thing about this shield, aside from the functionality, is that it is quickly and easily removed. You can take it off and ride around town, or whatever, and just as quickly slap it back on and take a road trip. My helmet is still in the breeze, but no buffeting, my chest gets minimal wind, no more hanging on for dear life, even at 80-85 mph. Truth is, I seldom ever take it off these days, it has improved the ride that much. Hope this helps.
