I had a professor who was very fast to point out that accuracy and precision are two different things. A thermometer could read out to .0000, but if it was only accurate to +/- .1 who cares.
I don't think the spinning dial indicators is a calibration as much as it is setting the initial location. The indicators are very light to move, and can get bumped off of 0 while not running, this just gives them a known location.
