Hmmm, maybe it's a weedout feature. If you are not flexible enough to go through the seat removal sequence you are not qualified to own a motorcycle...... 
On my Griso, the key goes in the side, twist, then you place your knee in mid seat, push down with the knee while pulling up on the back of the seat. Easy. Installing usually takes some form of massive force to get the damn catch to lock.
The 650L has you remove the left side panel, left side seat strap bolt then two bolts under the fender. All pretty straight forward......
