I belong to a vintage motorcycle club and often ride with as many as 15 -20 (split into two groups) on a scheduled ride.
The average age is well above 50 and we're on old motorcycles so there are no pi**ing contests and have nothing to prove. We only ride back roads in a loose staggered formation and stick to the speed limits - which is rarely above 90 kph (54 mph).
I've been with this group for 19 years and we've never had an incident.
Most of us also ride modern bikes and sometimes a few of us will go for a day ride and stick to the same riding rules. Our newer bikes are much faster, but nobody is out for speed. I trust these guys because I know them well and, oddly enough, we often ride those same back roads
I/we avoid huge groups like charity rides or poker runs where we don't know anyone or how they ride. Trust is a big issue.
But I also like riding alone and have no problem taking off for a day or a few days on the road by myself. In fact, in many cases, I prefer solo because I can go as fast or slow as I want and stop as often as I want.
I enjoy taking pictures on my rides and travels and all that stopping annoys some people so going solo is the best way.
