On my commute to work this morning I was headed into an intersection and I had the green light. There were cars stopped in both directions at the red light on the crossing street. Out of the blue, the car to my right decides to blow the light and cross — right in front of me. I hit the brakes hard and fortunately they did an amazing job of hauling the bike down to a quick stop. Luckily there was plenty of room between me and the car behind me.
There were witnesses screaming at the woman driving the car, and I probably could have chased her down and obtained a license plate number but frankly I was a bit dazed at that point and just wanted to move along rather than continue to be a sitting duck in the middle of the street.
So whether you're just out riding for pleasure or commuting like me, take note and take care.

part of riding safe is the deal with uncertainty, and there are plenty.
I visit my son in college 75 miles away last weekend. on the way home the weather is very hot at 90 degree+ and the HWY is stop and go due to accident a mile ahead. Sharing lane is very tempting to have air circulated under black jacket when the traffic speed is 0 - 5 mph. I decide to split lane, then last moment retract the idea and suddenly a bike at 35+ MPH zooms by out of nowhere. Had I split lane at that moment, accident is certain.
I haven't splited lane even in city when traffic is 0 mph in the last 25 yrs
Look back the guy who splits lane commit major mental error, his speed is 35MPH fater than traffic, people can open doors for any reason, he is tossed.
I always give hard stare to offenders like this.
on street or hiway when I am followed closer than I like, always give hand signal for the car behind me to back out ... it always work. In intersection, if seeing a car close in, I give hand signal to make sure they see me, they stop at a very comfortable distance.
keeping distance is a cheap and safe way to stay out of trouble.
