Currently California is the only state that allows lane splitting. There are no laws explicitly allowing it or making it illegal in CA. The California Highway Patrol has outlined "safe and prudent" guidelines that say motorcycles can lane split at speeds up to 30 MPH with a variance of no more than 10 MPH over the prevailing speed of traffic. According to the AMA, Oregon, Washington, and Texas are considering bills to make lane splitting legal and the AMA is lending support siting two California studies that conclude that lane splitting is a safe and effective tactic for riders. Non lane splitting riders are rear ended at twice the rate as lane splitting riders. Other benefits are reduced travel time, better fuel mileage, and higher rates of motorcycle usage.
