They have no real excuse other than the old saying look where you are going, so they are anticipating the turn and looking in that direction, with only a precursory glance at what's coming toward them. If it's not as large as a car (like a motorcycle), they don't immediately recognize it.

If someone coming at you looks like they are going to turn left, flash your lights, do the weave and cover your brakes. IMO (and as proven by studies) a white helmet and high viz vest help also.

I'd also use extra attention to those newer and faster generation electric scooters now apparently occupying road lanes as well curb lanes and sidewalks. These un-plated, unregulated motorized vehicles can do a motorcycle rider some serious harm. Many seem to swerve out from nowhere, and then disappear again.

Human error! (And much ignorance.) A lot of people are getting hurt on those things!

I'm a cyclist and biker who lives in a place that still has no laws regarding texting and driving. Dangerous, dangerous, poop.
Here's a fun story...

The other night I was driving home (in a car) and set to make a left turn in my neighborhood, when a guy on a OneWheel ripped through the intersection, then stopped to curse me for almost hitting him.

He was wearing a full-face moto helmet and yelled that he's a pedestrian and has the right-of-way. (...riding the wrong way on a one-way street when he came to the intersection.)

I tried to tell him. I tried to say that he's not a pedestrian, that he should ride with traffic as though he's a bicycle or motorcycle. I tried to say he needs to be predictable. He was anything but when he lifted his shirt and put his hand on a pistol.

Yadda yadda, no one was hurt.

To the OP, sorry, man. I'm glad you're well and able to ride again. Don't sweat your decision too much, for you can always make new choices later. And yes, you'll likely fare better with a lawyer. Best of luck...
