Just took that route (I-40 to 377 out of Holbrook) - not a bad route to take and really not that much slower. Plus, on 260 there is a look out just before it dives down off the rim. A nice quick break. Impressive views.
Most of us in Phoenix do what we can to avoid I-17; especially on a Sunday (if your heading south).
Plan B, 87 out of Winslow, then hang a right at 260 - I'm not keen on 260 through Strawberry and Pine to Payson - you end up in Camp Verde and back to I-17. But taking 87 to Payson then down the hill to Fountain Hills and on to Apache Junction would not be that bad. More straight forward than using I-17 for you.
