Someday I'll drop down to just one bike and want something super solid and dependable. I admit to getting older but plan to go kicking and screaming loudly all the way. Sidecar vs. trike? No question here.
Sidecar! A well setup rig handles great and is no problem to ride - 20,000 miles in the mountains of NC,Va, and WV plus the same along the coast and thru the foothills made a convert out of me.
Wife has a Can-Am, super machine. Would buy one for myself if I hadn't discovered sidecars. Check out Claude Stanley And Freedom sidecars in central PA.
Only question is a cargo bed or a bullet style. Hannibal makes good stuff but I like the classics.
Just can't handle the trike concept, refuse to admit defeat.
Let me politely disagree. I have ridden sidecar hacks, I have owned Goldwing trikes and now own a Can Am Spyder RT. The side car hack has unique handling that is a bit unnerving at best. Best stay with a Ural hack as they don't go fast enough to be ultra scarey. A Goldwing trike handles according to the type kit that was installed. My last was a Roadsmith which has the longest wheel base where the rear axle is behind the passenger and with independent suspension had a nice ride. I bought a Can Am Spyder RT (2010) about 6 months ago. Handling needed tweeking; that is, a heavier anti-sway bar, metal Heim links, Elko shocks with the correct spring rates and the rear air suspension and tires set to the right pressure. My RT now handles fine. One thing that would surprise the CB1100 owner is that the CB1100 would be a much better engine choice than what Can-Am chose for the first generation of these machines. The engine is 990cc Rotax engine that came from an Aprilla sport bike. You have to keep the engine spinning at over 5K rpm to make it smooth and get some decent power. I ride in 4th gear up to about 65 mph for that reason. The engine is fine, just not that great a choice for a heavy touring oriented machine. The newer engine (2014 in the RT) is 1330cc and has more power/torque and gets a LOT better mileage. My RT gets 27-32 mpg and it isn't unusual for the newer 1330cc machine to get close to 50 mpg. I need a touring model as we ride two up and the sportier models aren't suitable for long rides for a passenger (IMHO). I wish they had fitted the torquey CB1100 engine in my Spyder. At this point, the top of the line Spyder is going for north of $30K, in line with top of the line GL1800 trike conversions. If anyone ever considers a trike conversion, ride them all before making up your mind and have your coins lined as they ain't cheap.
