when are these bikes actually out of gas??

So I was riding today, and for the first time I was on the last mark for the gas gage, and it started flashing. I take it to the gas station and only manage to get 2.7 gallons in her. Isn't the tank nearly 4 gallons? I thought it would take 3.4-3.7 gallons if it was low enough to flash.

When it shuts off, of course!

I usually head for the nearest gas station when the dash starts blinking and I usually take around the same amount of fuel as you, 2.8 or 2.9 gallons. Either the fuel gauge is highly pessimistic or the claimed fuel capacity is optimistic. I am curious to hear if anybody has managed to get close to 3.9 gallons in. Some tanks don't allow you to use all of the space making them effectively a smaller tank. I don't care much to find out first hand.
