Well, you don't know why the light comes on. Could be full of oil, but the pump failed. You just don't know, and engine damage or seizure will happen pretty rapidly. They just don't run well without oil.
If the oil temp light comes on I would stop too. Overheated engines can blow head gaskets and more bad things I'm not as familiar with. Maybe crack a head.
