I belong to a vintage motorcycle club that was established in 1979 and we've been using hand signals since then and before signals lights became standard.
Using the correct hand signals in the correct way makes it very clear to drivers what the intended action is going to be.
Improper hand signals certainly can confuse drivers, no doubt about that.
