There are so many doomsday movies and scenarios shown on TV that now people just dismiss them. It's the same as becoming unaffected by the tragedy we see daily on the news and the ever increasing violence in movies.
As the population of the world grows, so will the poisoning of the earth's soil, fresh water, oceans and air.
Plagues and wars use to slow the population growth. But it unlikely that any nation would be foolish to start a world wide nuclear war. And epidemics are usually quelled within months.
If it as little as 100 years, I think that only a small percentage of the population would get to leave. But where are they going to go?
It has been almost 50 years since Neil Armstrong landed on the moon. A manned 9 month trip to Mars is not planned until the 2030s. And would a small colony be any better off there considering its climate and lifeless terrain?
