Thanks popgun, you spurred me on, after lifting the fuel tank and removing the black rh side cover it was easy to spot, thanks for the link.
After finding it i decided to unplug the connector and see what happens.
So with the key off i unplugged the 4 wire connector, then turned the key on and started the engine
With the engine cold it started up fine as usual and sat just below 1000 rpm.
Also the orange engine light was blinking 3 long and 8 short blips ( code 38 ) probably code for faulty IACV ?
The ecm monitors the current through the windings of the IACV and reports a low current ( open ) condition
4 wires are connected to the IACV which as you mentioned drives the stepper motor, i assume the feedback to the ecm is by oil temp, tps and rev counter which are combined, written to flash memory, and as the operating temperature increases the value changes and sets the position of the stepper motor accordingly.
At this point i am wondering what would happen if the stepper motor is stuck enough so the actuator does not retract back fully and gets stuck halfway back, only to get another set of steps on the next cold start....
