I just came back from riding a borrowed Versys 1000(surely beats renting a car) for 900 miles in another country. What's said in the first post is true, the Versys is almost the polar opposite of the CB1100. I haven't ridden a 650 but the 1000 is very, very noisy compared to the CB and wind buffeting over the stock screen is deafening(6'). You need real good earplugs to ride at elevated speeds. The CB is much quieter, even without a windscreen.
Although the Versys has loads of HP and torque and a big tank, more electronics etc. I'd vote for the CB anytime!
