I don't agree with the information given.  He says that preload does not change the spring rate.  This is true on a straight rate spring, but not on progressively wound springs (like on almost all springs now).  

So the the more tightly wound (softer) section of a progressive spring compresses first.  The preload starts compressing this lighter section first, and then the more loosely wound, (heavier) rate sections are then called into play.

Does that sound right? Or am I off base?
