I used to have regular transitions lenses, and I found the same thing--they took a while to lighten up. A few months ago, I got transitions driving glasses. They don't get as dark, but they don't go completely clear, either. The amber coating increases contrast and the polarization decreases glare. They are superb for driving and riding. Plus, the polarization gives my Phone/GPS a funky 3-D effect
I still switch glasses when I ride at night. For changing light conditions on the road, like tunnels and deep shade, they do okay.
