You have to ride in California to get this...
#7
A lot of the inland areas are going to be pretty hot right now, but 79 and routes that branch off of it are lots of fun. The town of Julian is a popular destination for riders, as it going up Palomar Mountain. There's an observatory up top, not sure if it's still open to visitors (haven't been there since the Pandeezy)

It would be way too hot this time of year, but one of my favorites is 79, getting over to 74, which becomes "Pines to Palms", a really cool switchback into Palm Desert. If you've seen "It's a Mad, Mad, Mad World", that's the twisty road at the beginning of the chase, after Smiler Grogan jumps his Fairlane off the cliff.

This time of year in the heat, most riders like to just tool up the coast. From where you are, Torrey Pines is to your north, and you can cruise all the way up to Oceanside before you'd have to get back on the 5 or head back down the coast. In Oceanside, you can check out the Top Gun house we were talking about Smile

Jump on the 5 and head south, take the Coronado Bridge, and tool around Coronado. Go to Balboa Park and check out the museuems. Ride up to the Point Loma Lighthouse and check out the view.

As far as camping, anything fun is inland, and will be hot. For hiking, same thing, but you can walk the beach from Torrey Pines for miles to the north.
