The thumping of the motors of my BSA lightnings is one of the things I liked about them. The thumping was a result of the big pistons and conrods going up and down together. The crankshaft had an extremely heavy flywheel to keep the motor from destroying itself. That is why they were nicknamed the Birmingham Vibrators.
In a lumpy way it made you feel more connected to the engine. Twist the throttle and the pulses increased, let off and the mufflers made the most beautiful and distinct sound.
The BSAs also had an extremely comfortable seats. The only thing comparable to it that I have found is the seats on Polaris snowmobiles.
