Although calamari (or squid) and octopus are similar in texture, you don't get the thick tentacles with the suction cups with the calamari. The calamari is most often served as round bands, as it is the body of the calamari that has been sliced, whereas the octopus it is the tentacles that are sliced.
Calamari/squid is very common in Asian dishes, and one of my favourites is ginger squid as they make it in South East Asia.
Here is a lovely dish from north of Spain, pulpo gallega. Sliced octopus tentacles are cooked, and then sliced and served with olive oil and salt. Delicious!!
