I've been using an app called Glympse for sometime now which is useful as it tracks me so the wife knows when I've arrived to pick her up from work. Could just as easily be used for tracking while out on a ride.
It lets you decide how long it should share your location along with other features. I've been using the free version for awhile and it's pretty accurate.
Then again if you're out on a cross country trip a dedicated device like a Spot would give your family peace of mind.
