My Son Wants to Start Riding

From the perspective of a current 25 year old, I can say that the Internet makes it easy to stay grounded and cautious as a rider. My parents aren't huge fans of me riding (well my dad is a-ok, my mom worries a lot) but I am not one of the "invincible" minded kids anyway. I am active on Reddit, and the motorcycle forum there is a great place where people share videos and stories. It's been a great tool for me to see what is good and bad riding as well as being reminded that it's 'cool' to go ATGATT and be constantly on the lookout for SMIDSYs. I took an MSF course and it was great. I highly recommend. Does your son have friends that ride? If so, as long as they're good riders and not hooligans, he should be fine. I certainly wish I could ride with my dad!!

I can also attest towards the general attitude of our generation (let's call it those currently 18-30) is not to throw on a bandana and sunglasses and call it good, rather we're typically concerned with riding gear... whether as a fashion statement or as legitimate protection/comfort we're all about it.

My reasoning for highlighting this is that I nor anybody else on this forum knows your son, let alone how well you know him. For all we know he isn't like myself or Vervecken and thinks tennis shoes are fine and gloves are unnecessary.

So I say read him for what he is and actually take the appropriate steps to ensure that he learns how to ride defensively and when/where it is and more importantly where it is not appropriate to be a hooligan. Do not procrastinate getting involved, even though your concern already tells me you won't, I'm just trying to validate your efforts.
