Every rider I see with clip-ons does this. After putting clip-ons on my CB I realize it's because it's probably the easiest position to wave from. Raising up to actually wave or even hold a flat hand out takes moving you whole upper body, whereas dropping your left hand down and doing the "low peace sign" takes almost no effort.

Do you think it is possible the origin of the "low wave" may have something to do with avoiding any confusion with hand signals for turning before we had turn signals?

I personally agree that it is just about looking cool. If somebody waves first I usually wave back in t he same manner as them.

I usually try to wave unless I'm in the middle of something I feel I need both hands to accomplish and remain safe.

But I noticed it again today, why do riders always wave low, like below the waist, point down towards the ground? It takes longer to take your hand from the handle bars to below you waist than to just pop it up like saying hi. Usually it's a two finger wave. Just curious.
