ferret, welcome to the Kidney Stone club. An organization that nobody wants to be in, and once you're in it you so wish you weren't.
I had this three years ago and I attribute it directly to an increase in tea drinking. It was the day from he**. The pain started in the am. in the groin area, which was unusual but not too bad. Then it subsided. Later that day it hit me with a vengeance. I felt like I had to pee but couldn't. And it got worse, and worse and worse until I thought my left side was going to explode.
I was in agony and I didn't know what it was. I went to the emergency room and was barely able to explain it to the intake nurse. They knew what it was though. Confirmed with an MRI. They gave me a Flomax pill and a prescription for some kind of pain killer (did not fill it). Once they told me what it was and the Flomax kicked in I could pee, which was a huge relief. Knowing what it was and being able to go, I figured I could deal with any residual pain.
They sent me home with a few of those mesh cones that you pee into to catch the stones. Wouldn't you know, about three days later I passed about 6 of those little bastids.
I've been on the water hard ever since because I am not going through that again.
