Had the one experience in my early 30s. Pretty bad pain. Haven't had a recurrence in 2 decades. BUT, if I had to give up the majority in your comment above ( which I haven't) I'd be willing to tolerate an episode every 5 to 10 years as the result of refusal to do it. On the same topic. Good friend passed a kidney stone on a remote multi day backpacking trip in the Wyoming Wind Rivers Mountains 2 years or so ago. Began in the afternoon and abated just as his son was going to trek out the next morning solo for help from approx 18 miles in. Darn funny story to hear him tell it with color commentary.
The problem with that line of thinking is there's no guarantee that every event is just pain and then you pass the stone. That's not what happens in real life. A LOT of people can't pass the stones without surgical intervention of one kind or another. Some have stents inserted, removed, and inserted for months at a time. Sometimes they have to surgically go up there and actually grab the stone and pull it out. Very uncomfortable.
And even if you don't have any symptoms or pain, your body can be making stones and they're not an issue or painful until they move out of the kidney and get stuck somewhere and then you can have many stones at once.
