When I lived in an apartment in the ‘90s, I had a nice bike that I had to park outside in a very rough area. I bought an alarm with a siren on it, and thought I was all set. Then a friend of mine asked me what, exactly, was I going to do if I heard the siren go off in the middle of the night. I’m going to run out and stop them from stealing my bike, I said. No you’re not, he said. Are you going to bring a gun? If you’re not going out there with a gun, you’re only going to get your butt kicked, and they’ll steal the bike anyway. I don’t know about the gun part, but, considering the area, he had a point.
