I'll answer on Ferret's behalf.
It's because, back in the day when there was no limit, a member worked his way through nearly all of his/her posts and deleted them thereby making incomprehensible the discussion on quite a few threads. As a result, Guth decided to impose a time limit on editing posts.
If all else fails you can always correct something you've said in a subsequent post. If you find you want to correct or edit something after 60 minutes, Ferret and I are happy to help. I guess, though, we reserve our right to refuse if, in our view, the request is in some way unreasonable.
PS, I don't want to protract this discussion; but, PeterBaron, perhaps you could provide links to the articles you quoted from?
