This one is not a game. While the Isle of Man TT racers run in pairs, Irish road racing starts in packs.

While I admire Moto GP riders (especially compared to F1), racing on real roads, with their imperfect surfaces full of paint lines, bumps, dips, cracks and jumps is the ultimate. Stone walls, no run-off areas, no banked turns, hundreds of transitions from bright sun/shade/sun, not to mention the occasional animals/cars/people.

Back in 1986, I actually did an open-traffic lap at the Isle of Man between race days (NOT on Mad Sunday) on a 250 Honda. I was a couple hundred feet ahead of another bike, when I saw up a mile ahead, a steam train about to pass diagonally under the roadway. I hustled ahead as hard as I could, and just got past. My pursuer was lost forever as the huge clouds of steam enveloped the roadway.

A little later I was chasing an English rider up the mountains into the fog. I was going faster than I should, but okay as long as I stayed behind his big yellow license plate. As the fog got really thick, we were suddenly humbled by a half-dozen BMWs, with their passengers and their Krauser bags. They passed us like we were stopped. We chased them into the thickening soup, but it was pointless, as the last big German license plate quickly disappeared.
