The abbreviation "CB" is derived from the Japanese "C" LU "B" Man Race which in 1958 was held at the famous Suzuka Circuit. The "C" stands for the type and the "B" refers to the sporty version.

So it seems like the model naming started out with a definite meaning, then proceeded to get all random after that.. hmmmm...
