If you want to be extremely formal, you'd call a wagon a Shooting Brake. If you look it up, you'll find that the name basically describes the car's purpose.
I lament the passing of wagons in the U.S. Not necessarily the big family trucksters of my 1970s childhood, but it was cool when a wagon was included in the lineup of almost any car you'd want. Corollas, Accords, Focus, etc. Sure, SUVs are nice, but having to get on a ladder to wash my wife's otherwise smallish CRV is a chore, and we don't always need such a tall car.
