The Harvey House in Slaton TX for any train fans

In the 1870's, there were no dining cars and train travelers headed west had to find whatever was available when the train stopped to take on fuel and water.

The Harvey House concept began in 1876 when Scottish immigrant Fred Harvey recognized the need for quality meals and lodging for railroad travelers. He then persuaded the manager of the new Atchison, Topeka, & Santa Fe (AT&SF) Railroad that he could provide just that. The first Harvey House restaurant opened in the Topeka Santa Fe Depot Station that same year. It was an immediate success and led to other Harvey House restaurants and hotels about every 100 miles along the entire Santa Fe route.

The Slaton Harvey Hose operated from 1912 to 1942, but the facility continued as a passenger and freight depot for many years. The building went into disrepair after ATS&F ceased operations from Slaton and was facing demolition when a group of locals and others with close connections mounted a successful effort to save and restore the building.
