Air cooled engines tolerate the heat very well. Maybe it doesn't like standing still in traffic, but once rolling, it will be fine.

Regarding guards, I like OEM:

Pictures don't make justice: I think they are the best looking, and the less intrusive. I have them in black, and they look like being part of the original frame design.
