I wonder which country invented the side stand. Looking at the second picture made me realize that when a person in a country with right-hand side riding stops and puts the bike on the side stand the bike leans into the road. In places like Japan and the UK and Australia where we drive on the left, a bike on its side stand leans away from the road.

Interesting point Cormanus. When on another forum years back, a fellow countryman to you, after seeing a photo of my Moto Guzzi Breva, commented that his Breva appeared to have a longer side stand than those sold in the States and was shaped differently. His thought, because the angle would differ with the road crown according to the country where it's sold. Maybe there is something to that. I know my wife's Suzuki seems perilously upright when parked roadside where there is a steep crown.
