Personally, I don't want to have a backpack with me every time I ride. Most of my riding is in the summer, and its just too hot to have a backpack sitting on my back. I guess I could buy some nylon or other soft throw-over the seat type bags, but wondered what the rest of you do for just regular, everyday storage needs.
I have a Nelson-Rigg tail bag that I had intended on using for day trips and for commuting, but I only use it on longer trips now. For the short trips or commuting I use a roll-top dry bag tied down to my rear rack with Rok Straps (if I didn't have the rack, it would still fit across the rear part of the seat). For day trips, it can hold a extra clothing, a thermos, a few tools, rags, and cleaner spray. For commuting, I carry my laptop, my newspaper, a thermos, and occasionally extra clothing. works well and is way less costly than motorcycle-specific luggage.
