The only sharp-edged surface I can find beneath the seat is the lip of the steel fender. The strange thing there is the straps aren't frayed where they crossed over the edge of the fender. The fraying was in the middle of the strap, directly above the tire.
I fully expected the same thing to happen as a result of the straps rubbing across the shock springs, but when I inspected the straps upon arriving home there wasn't a single additional mark on them. I still don't trust that method, however, plus I don't like how it looks.
cookiemech, my intent is definitely not to torture all you Eskimos out there, holed up in your cozy igloos. Not at all. My hope is that these little missives will serve as inspirational fuel for the fire to help you make it through these cold, dark winter days.
