What’s sharp under the seat that could have caused the fraying? The latch maybe?

I have several thousand miles logged with a bag strapped to the rear set like you show with zero chafing or tangling from rubbing on the suspension.

If you got used to the strain on your back it probably means that you just were using different muscles and there’s probably nothing major wrong with the seating position for you. If you’re sore after every ride, than adjustment might be needed (perhaps to both the bike and you). Also, it’s pretty easy to move the bars slightly toward you, if the mounting bracket is the same as in the 2013s
